History

As the oldest local sorority in Wisconsin, Alpha Sigma has had a significant impact on campus life of the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater and has positively influenced the lives of thousands of young women who have attended. Originally founded in 1898 as the Aureolia Society, the organization was restructured to its present form in 1931. Alpha Sigma sorority was organized to promote the social, intellectual, and personal growth of young women and has its designation as a social sorority. The Active Chapter of Alpha Sigma has a strong and well-documented organizational structure.

The Alpha Sigma Alumnae Association, of which there are hundreds of dues paying members, retains a close link and supportive relationship with the active chapter. Specifically, the Alumnae support scholarship, provide financial assistance and advice, help negotiate the Chapter house lease, support leadership training, provide assistance in the form of advice and counsel, and help to maintain a positive environment amongst the active members. In addition, the Alumnae membership has an annual business meeting and luncheon which is always held on the first Saturday in May. During this luncheon, graduating seniors are inducted into the organization. The luncheon is consistently attended by over one hundred Alumnae members. The Alumnae Executive Board holds regular meetings to remain directly involved and to provide guidance to the Active chapter.
